A young Jewish atheist (Logan Lerman) attends college in 1951 Ohio, where he clashes with the school's established social order. Directed by James Schamus (who also adapted the script from the novel of the same name by Philip Roth), the film follows the protagonist as he clashes with his oppressive parents (Danny Burstein and Linda Emond) and heads off to school where he meets, among other peers, an attractive, complicated classmate named Olivia (Sarah Gadon).
